We know your calendar is full of things that can’t move. Work deadlines, school pickups, doctor’s appointments, and birthday parties you forgot about. Somewhere in the middle of it all, a dental cleaning has been on the books for three months.
Then the week arrives, and something comes up. You think, “It’s just a cleaning. I’ll reschedule.”
So you cancel. Then you mean to call back and rebook, but the week gets busy, then the month gets busy, and before you know it, six months or more have passed
We hear this all the time, and we’re not mad. We understand, but we also want to explain why that cleaning is worth keeping, even when everything else feels more urgent.
Dr. James Dickert and Dr. Agatha Lynn at West Ashley Family Dentistry have been practicing in Charleston for years. They’ve seen what happens when patients stay on schedule and what happens when they don’t. The cleaning is the easiest appointment you have. Keeping it is one of the best things you can do for your health.

The Cleaning Is the Shortest Appointment You Have
Let’s start with the logistics. Most cleanings take 45 minutes to an hour. Compare that to the other appointments on your calendar. A doctor’s visit often takes an hour and a half, including waiting room time. A haircut is 45 minutes minimum. A lunch with a friend can take two hours. A trip to the DMV is a whole afternoon.
Your dental cleaning takes less time than almost everything else you do. Unlike most of those things, it protects your health.
If you’re thinking about canceling because of time, ask yourself if you can find 45 minutes in the next six months. Almost certainly. That’s the whole commitment.
The Cleaning Prevents the Appointments You Don’t Want to Keep
Skipping a cleaning doesn’t save you time. It just delays the inevitable.
Small problems get caught at cleanings. Cavities, early gum disease, worn fillings, cracked teeth. When they’re caught early, the fix is usually quick. A small filling takes one visit. A bit of gum inflammation can be reversed with a deeper cleaning.
When they’re caught late, the fix takes multiple visits. A root canal, a crown, and a follow-up take more time than a cleaning ever would. An extraction and an implant take months. Gum disease treatment can stretch across several appointments.
So the choice isn’t really between keeping a cleaning and skipping it. It’s between a short appointment now and a much longer set of appointments later.
The Cleaning Fits Around Your Life
We know life is busy. That’s why we offer scheduling options that make it easier to keep your cleaning, such as:
- Early morning appointments. We open at 8:00 am Monday through Thursday, so you can come in before work.
- Afternoon slots. If mornings don’t work, we also have afternoon availability.
- Back-to-back appointments for the whole family. If you have kids, you can bring everyone in the same day and knock it all out in one trip.
- Advance scheduling. Book your next cleaning before you leave your current one. That way, it’s already on the calendar, and you don’t have to remember to call later.
- Reminder calls and texts. We’ll remind you before your appointment so it doesn’t sneak up on you.
- Online rescheduling. If something comes up, you can reschedule quickly.
- The goal is to make it easy. If there’s something we can do differently to help you keep your appointment, tell us.
What to Do If You Have to Cancel
Sometimes cancellations are unavoidable, and we understand. If you have to cancel, please give us as much notice as you can. A day or two is ideal. A few hours is better than nothing.
Why does notice matter? Because when you cancel at the last minute, that time slot goes empty. Someone else could have used it, like a patient in pain, a new patient trying to get in, or someone who’s been waiting weeks. When you give us advance notice, we can fill the slot. Everyone wins.
Here’s the other thing. If you have to reschedule, please actually reschedule. Don’t just cancel and plan to call back later. Call back now, while you’re on the phone, and get a new time on the books. That’s how the appointment stays in your life instead of falling off the schedule entirely.
What If You Haven’t Been in a While?
If you’ve been away for more than six months, don’t let that stop you from coming back. The longer you wait, the harder it feels. But the visit itself isn’t as bad as you’re imagining.
Dr. Dickert and Dr. Lynn take a conservative, no-judgment approach. They won’t lecture you about the gap. They’ll look at where you are now and build a plan to move forward.
If cost is a concern, we accept most insurance and offer financing through CareCredit. If you’re not sure what to expect, we’ll walk you through it.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to show up.
The Cleaning Is a Check-In, Not a Chore
Here’s the reframe we’d like you to consider. Your hygiene visit isn’t a chore you have to check off. It’s a check-in on your health.
Your hygienist looks at your gums, teeth, and mouth for anything that needs attention. They measure, screen, and track changes over time. Your dentist is doing the same. Together, they’re your first line of defense against problems that could take years and thousands of dollars to fix later. That’s worth 45 minutes, twice a year.
A Simple Way to Think About It
If you’re on the fence about keeping up with your cleanings, try this. Imagine you skipped it. Imagine you skipped the next one too. Where would you be in two years?
If the answer is “probably fine,” consider this. Most dental problems don’t hurt until they’re advanced. That’s why they’re so easy to ignore, but ignoring them doesn’t make them go away. It just makes them bigger.
If the answer is “probably not fine,” you already know what to do.
