If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, you’ve probably thought about it. Every time you think about it, the same feelings show up. Maybe you avoid it because of pain, fear of the drill, or embarrassment.
You start imagining the conversation before it even happens. You imagine the dentist’s look, the lecture, and the gentle but obvious disappointment. You think about the list of things that are wrong and the price tag attached to fixing it all. So you put it off, and then you put it off again. Somewhere along the way, a few months turned into a few years.
If that sounds familiar, this post is for you. We want to start by saying something that we won’t judge you! Not even a little.

Why Patients Stay Away
It’s usually not what you think. Dr. James Dickert and Dr. Agatha Lynn have been practicing at West Ashley Family Dentistry for over 20 years. They’ve had thousands of conversations with patients who’ve returned after a long break, and they’ve heard the same story in every version.
- Sometimes it’s anxiety. A bad experience as a kid. A dentist who didn’t listen. A procedure that hurt more than it should have.
- Sometimes it’s cost. Dental work isn’t cheap, and it’s easy to convince yourself you’ll deal with it when things settle down.
- Sometimes it’s life. A move, a job change, a new baby, a sick parent. You push the cleaning to the bottom of the list, and then it falls off entirely.
- Sometimes it’s just the feeling that nothing hurts, so nothing must be wrong. That one’s the most common.
- Sometimes it’s shame. Pure and simple. The longer you wait, the harder it feels to walk back in.
None of those reasons make you a bad patient. They make you a human being.
What We Actually Care About
Dr. Dickert and Dr. Lynn take a conservative approach to dentistry. That’s not just a phrase because it’s how they practice.
For you, that means we’re not looking for reasons to sell you treatment. We’re looking for the smallest, most sensible intervention that will get you back on track. If a problem can wait and be watched, we’ll tell you. If something needs attention, we’ll explain why and what the options are. If you need a specialist, we’ll help you find one. If everything looks fine, we’ll say so.
That’s the whole approach. Conservative, honest, and patient-centered.
And here’s what that means for a patient who hasn’t been in a while. We won’t overwhelm you, so we won’t list ten things and hand you an estimate. We’ll look, talk with you about what we see, and build a plan that fits your situation. If that plan takes a few visits to complete, that’s fine. If we can phase it over time, we will.
We’ll also tell you what can wait. The goal is to get you moving in the right direction.
What a Welcome Back Visit Actually Looks Like
If you’ve been away for a while, we designed the first visit back to be the easiest.
We start with a conversation. Before anything happens, we sit down with you and ask about your health history, your concerns, and what’s kept you away. You won’t get a lecture.
Then, we do a gentle exam. Dr. Dickert or Dr. Lynn will examine your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. If it’s been a long time, they’ll take digital X-rays to see what’s happening below the surface. The goal is to get a clear picture, not to find problems to fix. We check for what matters most, like gum disease, oral cancer, and signs of decay. Some of these conditions have no symptoms early on. That’s why the visit matters even when nothing hurts.
Next, we talk about what we found. You’ll get a clear explanation of what’s going on and your options. If there are multiple paths forward, we’ll lay them out. We build a plan together. You decide what to do, and in what order. If you need to start small, that’s fine. If you want to tackle everything at once, we can talk about that too.
We make the next visit easy. We’ll schedule your next cleaning before you leave. If you’re nervous, we can talk about sedation options. If you have a busy schedule, we’ll find a time that works. That’s it! No surprises or judgment.
What If You’re Nervous?
You’re not alone, and you’re not the first patient to feel that way. If you’re nervous, tell us. You can tell the front desk when you schedule, or tell the hygienist when you sit down. You can tell Dr. Dickert or Dr. Lynn when they come in. The more they know, the more they can help.
What About Cost?
We know cost matters. It’s one of the most common reasons patients wait. Our office accepts cash, checks, flexible spending accounts, and major credit cards. We file dental insurance claims for you and work to maximize your benefits. If you don’t have insurance, or if your plan doesn’t cover everything, we offer financing through CareCredit and payment arrangements for qualified patients.
We’ll discuss costs upfront, before any treatment begins, so there are no surprises.
