Making Your Smile Last: How to Extend the Life of Your Denture

If you wear a denture, you already know what a difference it makes. You probably smile more freely. You might enjoy foods that might have felt tricky before. And you probably appreciate not having to think about your teeth in quite the same way.

But here’s something we hear often at West Ashley Family Dentistry: patients aren’t always sure how to care for their denture once they have it. Maybe they were given a brief rundown after the fitting, but years later, they’re noticing it doesn’t fit quite like it used to. Or they’re wondering if there’s more they could be doing to protect their investment.

The good news is that with the right care, a quality denture can serve you well for many years. Here’s how to make that happen.

Handle With Care (Even Over the Sink)

This might sound simple, but it’s worth saying: dentures are durable, but they’re not indestructible. A drop onto a hard bathroom floor can cause cracks or break a tooth. And because they’re precisely fitted to your mouth, even a small chip can affect how they feel.

When you’re handling your denture, do it over a folded towel or a sink partially filled with water. That way, if they slip, there’s something soft to catch them.

Cleaning the Right Way

Your denture needs daily cleaning, but not with regular toothpaste. Most whitening or abrasive toothpastes are too harsh and can create tiny scratches where bacteria like to hide. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush designed specifically for dentures, along with a mild soap or a denture cleaner.

Here’s what we recommend:

  • Rinse your denture after meals to remove food particles
  • Brush them daily to remove plaque and stains
  • Soak them overnight in water or a mild denture solution to keep them from drying out
  • Rinse thoroughly before putting them back in the morning

One thing to avoid? Hot water. It can warp the base of your denture, changing how it fits.

Your Gums Change. Your Denture Should Keep Up.

Here’s something many patients don’t realize: your mouth doesn’t stay the same over time. The bone and gum tissue beneath your denture naturally change shape. That’s not a sign that anything is wrong, it’s just how bodies work.

But it does mean that a denture that fit perfectly five years ago may start feeling loose or uncomfortable now. When that happens, you might be tempted to use over-the-counter adhesives to make up the difference. While adhesives can help temporarily, they’re not a long-term solution.

A loose denture isn’t just annoying. It can lead to sore spots, difficulty chewing, and even changes in your speech. More importantly, it can accelerate bone loss underneath because the pressure isn’t distributed evenly anymore.

Regular Checkups Still Matter

We know it sounds strange to schedule a dental appointment when you don’t have natural teeth anymore. But those visits serve an important purpose. During a denture checkup, we’re looking at:

  • How well your denture fits and whether any adjustments are needed
  • The health of your gum tissue and underlying bone
  • Signs of wear that might eventually affect function

Sometimes a simple reline, where we refit the base of your denture to your current gum contour, can add years of comfortable use. Catching issues early means we can make small adjustments now instead of bigger repairs later.

When It’s Time for a New One

Even with excellent care, dentures don’t last forever. Most will need to be replaced or rebased every five to eight years as your mouth continues to change. That’s normal, and planning for it helps you avoid the frustration of a denture that just won’t stay put.
