Dr. James Dickert and Dr. Agatha Lynn are dedicated to creating healthy, comfortable smiles for their patients. Patients can treat tooth discoloration with cosmetic dentistry in their Charleston, SC dental office. For example, our teeth whitening treatment can address extrinsic stains, while tooth bonding treatment or veneers treat intrinsic stains.

Causes of Tooth Discoloration in Charleston, SC

There are several common causes of discolored teeth:

  • Poor Oral Hygiene: If you brush and floss twice a day for two minutes, you can prevent discolored teeth. Buildup from eating and drinking can discolor the tooth enamel and also lead to oral health problems. Food debris contribute to plaque and tartar that build up on the teeth and gums.
  • Foods and Drinks: Certain foods and drinks contain chromogens, a compound that can stain the tooth enamel. Brushing and flossing regularly as well as hydrating with water can minimize the chance of staining. Additionally, we recommend patients with these stains to schedule routine dental cleanings.
  • Nicotine: Smoking cigarettes, vaping, and using tobacco products can cause yellow teeth and also lead to chronic bad breath. The nicotine and tar contained in many tobacco products penetrate the tooth enamel and quickly discolor the teeth.
  • Medications: Antihistamines, antihypertensive and antipsychotic medications can stain the teeth as a side effect. If you take a medication that has discolored your enamel, please let our office know and we will help.

Teeth Whitening with Opalandescence® and Cosmetic Treatments

We use Opalescence products for our in-office whitening treatment. This treatment takes about one hour and will provide immediate results. Patients can maintain their results by avoiding staining foods and beverages and nicotine. We may also offer touch-ups in our office as needed.

We take dental impressions for patients who choose take-home treatment to create customized whitening trays. Once these trays are complete, we provide patients with whitening gel and trays. Patients with sensitive teeth benefit from this option as it gradually whitens the enamel over time.

We recommend dental veneers and tooth bonding treatment if patients have tooth discoloration due to a dental injury or tooth wear. Intrisic stains within the tooth cannot be whitened with traditional whitening treatments. Veneers and bonding treatment cover and protect discolored teeth and brightens the appearance of the smile.
