Common Causes of Tooth Wear and Erosion

The most frequent reasons why patients have worn teeth include:

  • Teeth grinding (Bruxism)
  • Acidic foods and beverages
  • Dental injuries
  • Acid reflux
  • Tooth stress

If you have noticed signs of tooth wear, jaw pain, tooth sensitivity, or pressure on your teeth, please contact our dental office. We will help determine the cause of your tooth wear and provide treatment to improve the function and look of your smile.

Treating Tooth Wear

Patients with a dental injury or tooth wear and tear can benefit from:

  • Nightguards: For patients who clench and grind their teeth at night, we offer nightguards. Similar to mouthguards, professional nightguards are made of acrylic and prevent the teeth from grinding together.
  • Dental Bonding: Tooth bonding uses a biocompatible material that is molded and sculpted onto a prepared tooth. This bonding material can also be color-matched to brighten the smile and blend in with the look of the smile. Dental bonding is a great option for patients who have worn and discolored teeth.
  • Porcelain Veneers: Dental veneers are thin, porcelain ceramic coverings applied to the front of teeth. Like dental bonding, porcelain veneers can cover and protect the tooth enamel. Although veneers may last longer than dental bonding, it only protects the front of teeth and cannot be used on molars or the chewing surface.
