Gum Disease Risk Factors

If your gums bleed regularly, it may be a sign you have gum disease or periodontitis. Some patients may go a lifetime without knowing they have this condition. However, periodontitis is linked to the development of serious health problems, including diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

With regular preventative dental care, which can be provided by Dr. James Dickert and Dr. Agatha Lynn, patients can reverse the damage done by gum disease. At West Ashley Family Dentistry, we not only focus on your dental health but your overall health. Preventative care and knowing your health risk factors are the first steps to improving your health.

Risk Factors: Periodontitis

There are some factors that may increase your chance of developing gum disease. If any of these risk factors apply to you, be sure to let our dentists know, so that they can provide the appropriate care.

Smoking Or Tobacco Use: Smoking or using tobacco not only leads to more health concerns but also increases your chances of developing gum disease. Smoking interferes with the gum tissue and can cause receding gums over time.

Compromised Immune System: If you have a compromised immune system, your body’s ability to fight off the bacteria that cause gum disease is weakened. Let us know if you have any conditions that affect your immune system so that we are aware of this risk and can act accordingly.

Hormonal Changes: Many women will develop gum disease during pregnancy because hormonal changes can increase your risk of developing the disease. During pregnancy, be proactive about dental cleanings and your oral health to keep gingivitis in check.

Medication: Certain medications can make your mouth more vulnerable to plaque and bacteria. Be sure to let us know if you are taking any medications, and keep scheduling biannual visits in our office.
