Is Dental Sedation Safe?

Some patients, especially those with dental fear or anxiety, may be unsure about the safety of dental sedation. We’re here to tell you that dental sedation is a safe and effective treatment option monitored by our experienced dental team.

At West Ashley Family Dentistry, Dr. James Dickert and Dr. Agatha Lynn provide sedation dentistry for comfortable, pain-free care. In their Charleston, SC dental office, Dr. Dickert and Dr. Lynn work with patients to explain their treatment and how dental sedation affects the body. They will also ensure that patients feel comfortable under their care through each step of the treatment process.

Benefits of Dental Sedation

Sedation dentistry allows patients to receive relaxing and comfortable dental care in our Charleston dental office. Dental sedation also allows our dentists to perform more treatments in fewer visits.

Sedation dentistry also:

  • Decreases the gag reflex
  • Alleviates anxiety
  • Provides pain-free care
  • Eliminates joint and muscle soreness
  • Enhances the effectiveness of local anesthetic

Dental sedation is great for patients who have dental fear or anxiety, those with special needs, and patients who require more intensive procedures. We will review your options with you before your dental procedure and work with you to create a treatment plan.

Treatment with Dental Sedation

Our dentists offer nitrous oxide which is administered using a small mask that fits over the nose. Nitrous oxide, a sort of inhalation sedation, does not require needles or injections.

This type of sedation takes effect and also wears off quickly, which allows patients to drive themselves to and from their appointment. Because nitrous oxide is odorless, it does not bother patients who are sensitive to smells.
