Are Your Gums Healthy?

West Ashley Family Dentistry places an emphasis on the maintenance of healthy gums as part of your dental care in our office. Gum health is a key component of your overall dental health and also plays an important role in the maintenance of good physical health and well being. Gum health can be impacted by and have an impact on the condition of your oral health as well as your overall health.

Poor gum health can be caused by a range of factors from lack of dental care and poor oral hygiene to existing medical conditions or the use of certain medications. Whatever the reason, addressing gum disease effectively is important in order to avoid other complex problems affecting the teeth and your risk of developing related health issues. The structure of the gums supports your teeth- if this is failing, the teeth will soon be affected, leading to changes in the bite or even tooth loss.

Do I Have Gum Disease?

Often called a “silent disease”, many patients do not recognize the early warning signs of developing periodontal disease which can typically be addressed conservatively. Common signs can include:

  • Gums that bleed during tooth brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Gums that appear red or swollen

These are the early signs that gingivitis is developing, an infection of the gum tissue that often begins along the gum line. Over time, this can develop into periodontitis. Late stage gum disease is often characterized by shifting teeth, deep pockets along the gum line and changes in the fit and comfort of the bite.

Dr. Dickert and Dr. Lynn look for the signs of gum disease during routine dental care visits and our team takes time with each patient to discuss any medical issues, lifestyle habits and other unique factors that can impact your oral health.

How Do I Keep My Gums Healthy?

Maintaining healthy gums can be accomplished through daily oral hygiene and regular preventive dental care. Tooth brushing flossing and periodic exams in our Charleston area dental office will keep gum disease in check and provide the opportunity for our team to intercede when necessary with periodontal therapy.

If you have an existing medical condition, smoke or are genetically prone to chronic gum disease, we offer personalized dental care that includes oral hygiene advice for your unique needs.
