What Is A Dental Implant?

Charleston, SC dentists Dr. James Dickert and Dr. Agatha Lynn offer all types of dental implants for the replacement of missing teeth. Dental implants provide patients with secure, natural and durable results. Dental implants have become the “gold-standard” in tooth replacement, restoring the most natural appearance, fit and function when compared to traditional treatment options.

A prosthetic tooth comprised of three separate parts, a dental implant is designed to mimic the anatomy of a natural tooth. Dental implants are a practical option for replacing one missing tooth, or they can be used to secure a hybrid denture when replacing a full arch of teeth. Dental implants have a nearly 98% success rate among current patients. Dr. Dickert or Dr. Lynn work with patients who have missing teeth on an individualized basis to determine the most suitable replacement option for their oral health needs and aesthetic goals.

The Anatomy of a Dental Implant

Dental Restoration- The dental restoration looks and functions like a natural tooth crown. Depending on the number of missing teeth, a dental crown, bridge or denture can be secured using dental implants. The dental restoration is fabricated using high-quality dental porcelain and customized to match the shape, size, and color of your natural smile. Dr. Dickert or Dr. Lynn will anchor the crown to the abutment for a secure and comfortable fit.

Abutment Anchor- Once the dental implant has fused to the bone, an abutment will be attached. The abutment is designed to protrude from the gum line and is used to anchor the dental restoration in place.

Dental Implant Post- Made of high-grade dental titanium, the dental implant post is much like a tiny screw. Your West Ashley dentist will coordinate with a local oral surgeon to surgically place the implant into the jaw bone. The biocompatible nature of the titanium post is designed to fuse with the jaw bone for a permanent bond that will support natural bone regeneration. The dental implant posts typically take 3-6 months to heal fully. Many patients will wear a temporary restoration while healing.
