Why Do My Gums Bleed?

It is important to know that bleeding gums are not normal. If you experience frequent bleeding, swelling or redness in the gums, contact Charleston, SC West Ashely Family Dentistry. Flossing and brushing should never cause bleeding, and if they do, it is likely the bleeding is caused by a bacterial infection commonly referred to as periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that can lead to serious oral health and systemic health consequences. A bacterial infection, gum disease spreads through the gums creating deep pockets of bacteria. If you have gum disease you may experience chronic halitosis, bleeding of the gums, swelling, shifting of the teeth, or a change in the fit of an oral appliance.

If left untreated, gum disease can spread to the bloodstream. Gum disease has been linked to a range of health concerns such as:

  • Inflammation
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke

Treating Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is best treated when caught early. Early diagnosis is key to preventing furthur deterioration of teeth and gums. Regular oral health exams are one of the most effective ways of ensuring the early diagnosis of any oral health concern. Every dental health check up at our West Ashley dentist office includes a thorough periodontal screening.

Diligent oral hygiene is another great way to keep gums healthy. Brushing and flossing twice daily can keep bacteria from building up in the gums. Healthy gums help support the structure of your bite and protect the root structure of the tooth. Your gums are a part of healthy, beautiful and functional smile.

Dr. Dickert and Dr. Lynn offer treatment options for gum disease based on the stage and severity of the bacterial infection. After a thorough oral health exam, your dentist will discuss treatment options with you based on your personal oral health.
